Location of Plainfield

Plainfield is located approximately 15 miles southwest of Indianapolis in Hendricks County.  The Indianapolis International Airport is just east of Plainfield.  Also, state roads 40 and 267 run through Plainfield. 


History of Plainfield

Before Plainfield, Indiana was settled by Europeans, the Delaware Indians occupied the area.  In 1818, Europeans began to settle in this area and by 1839, it was an official town recognized by the Indiana government. 

 

Plainfield has a rich heritage of the Quaker faith and thus the high school mascot is a "Quaker".  The traditional Western Yearly Meeting of the Quaker organization, Western

Yearly Meeting of  Friends, has been taking place in Plainfield since 1858.

 

Historically, agriculture has played a major role in the economy of Plainfield.  Today, the farming industry still plays a major role while commercial development has tremendously increased in the area as well.

 

In the 1850s Hendricks County had a population of 14, 083 total.  Plainfield continues  development each year and currently has a population of over 25,000.

Recreation in Plainfield
