The City of Greenwood is located just 20 miles south of Indianapolis in Johnson County, making it a popular suburb for commuters headed into the city. Greenwood's highly-rated schools, numerous parks and recreation venues, and strong sense of community make it a popular choice for families who want a small-town atmosphere with easy access to all that Indianapolis offers.
Greenwood's first settlers arrived in the early 1820s. Initially known as Smocktown or Smock's Settlement, the community changed its name to Greenfield in 1825. In that same year, residents organized what is now Greenwood Presbyterian Church, and Johnson County was also formed and named in honor of Judge John Johnson of the Indiana State Supreme Court. In 1833, the town changed its name again - to Greenwood - to avoid confusion with Greenfield of Hancock County.
Greenwood real estate offers something for just about everyone. Newer subdivisions as well as homes in the downtown historic area can all be found in Greenwood.
